Woodthorpe Park
Grandma and Grandad lived on Mansfield Street. We visited often, buying home made 'suckers' (ice lollies) for one old penny (1d) from the corner shop, licking and slurping our way to Woodthorpe Park.
We stayed out for hours in those days. No mobile phones for us; all we had was the trust of our parents to, "Be good, be careful and be home for dinner."
Sadly, parents have good reason these days to feel extra cautious about their child's safety - and their own, often thinking twice before walking out alone.
Walking is good for us, but fear is stealing our fitness, leaving our beautiful parks and open spaces longing for the patter of feet on their pathways and echos of laughter in their trees.
