FAQ

EYFS Developmental Phases

All of you long serving nursery nurses and playgroup workers will remember the ages and stages we expected our children to live up to. We could argue that these were unfair, putting a strain on parents and children alike but I believe that Mary Sheridan and others like her only ever meant the Ages and Stages as a guide to development rather than a law!

The Early Years Foundation Stage takes account of developmental differences by overlapping age ranges to create six broad developmental phases; within these broad phases are important steps that each child will makes progress towards.

There are six broad developmental phases outlined here by age.

Six developmental phases

  1. Birth to 11 months
  2. 8 to 20 months
  3. 16 to 26 months
  4. 22 to 36 months
  5. 30 to 50 months
  6. 40 to 60 + months
