"Settling baby to sleep with a dummy can reduce the risk of cot death."
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) has been working since 1971 to help prevent unexpected deaths in infancy and promote infant health. Commonly labelled 'cot death', the tragedy of unexpected death can happen anywhere, not necessarily in a cot.
The latest research from FSID suggests that the risk of 'cot death' is reduced when a dummy is used to help babies settle to sleep. How will child care providers take this on board? How will you, an Early Years Practitioner, Childminder or Nanny relay the results of the latest research to parents who prefer their children not to have a dummy? Contraversially, will you include a new clause, in your contract with parents, about the use of dummies in your setting?
The experts are coming up with all sorts of ideas on preventing cot death. You can poo-hoo it all as conjecture or you can follow their advice. I know what I would do.
