"A directional text for renewed thinking on the future of schooling."
The co-authors of Rethinking Schooling describe their work as “An important resource for students of Curriculum Studies.” Reviewing the volume in the persona of one such student I find this to be a legitimate claim. Delving in to the text my senses were immediately aroused as I was immersed in the musty wooden smell and atmosphere of 17th century schoolrooms. Rather amusingly, the author of the first chapter on origins and development of the institutional categories of schooling refers to the classroom as an invention. Strange to think that the concept we have taken for granted for so long was in fact ‘invented as the original and ultimate open plan learning space accommodating up to 200 students.
Rethinking Schooling is coherently structured to walk the student through the 17th to the 21st. Century studying all things curricula along the way. Chapter 4 will appeal to those interested in pedagogy, as the author shares a ‘pedagogical moment in his discussion of the history and theory of pedagogy. There are chapters on lesson design, educational theory, planning methodological arrangement of teaching and learning, questions, the paradox of mathematical reform and theory of leadership.
This book is an aperitif to the historical research of 25 years the Journal of Curriculum Studies from whence the chapters of this book originated. Rethinking Schooling is indeed an important resource for students of Curriculum Studies moreover it is a Directional text for renewed thinking on the future of schooling.
