Cache Level 3 Diploma in Pre-school Practice

Understanding and promoting the development of pre-school children

Core Unit 1

E1, E2 and E3

E1 FOUR observations which fulfill the criteria in the assignment task.

Include FOUR observations of one child to provide information about the holistic development of the child.

(Use FOUR different observation methods)

Each observation requires:

• the aim of the observation

• the observation method used

• the age of the child in years and months

• the date and time of the observation

• a record of the observation

E3 Include a profile of the child based on the observations in the appendix.

Now use what you found out from your observations in E1 to include information the child's development.

Be clear about which areas of development you are profiling:

Social, physical, intellectual, emotional and language development (SPIEL)

For example you might write:

"In observation 3 of H's physical skills. H showed he was able to run safely around obstacles. He was most confident when climbing. His fine motor skills have improved since Observation 2 (say how)

I hope this is enough to get you started.

You know a lot, so share what you've got.

Establish models of good practice.

E2 Identify factors which may have influenced the validity and reliability of the observations.

You need to explain here how you made sure that the information you have in your observations truly represents the child and their abilities.

This means that you will have considered the best observation methods/technique to use, any interruptions and changes in child's environment, or to their usual routine, were they well at the time? Have you being subjective or biased? You need to objective and unbiased. Did your observations all take place on the same day? Did you have preconceived ideas about what you expected to see or did you record exactly what you observed in an honest and accurate way?
