It was the cover that attracted me to this book and the title ‘Understanding early years policy’ that challenged me to read it. The authors set out to share their knowledge and understanding of early years policy with readers at all levels of the profession. The result – an answer to prayer for any lecturer who has ever struggled to teach ‘policy’ in an interesting and comprehendible manner, and for all students who have tried to stay awake during their sessions. Early years policy is steadily demystified as the reader is taken on a journey of discovery from ‘What is policy’ to ‘Analysing the impact of policy’. The body of each chapter is sandwiched between a clear introduction and a concluding summary. Knowledge and understanding checking activities and suggestions for further reading are strategically placed throughout the book.
The strength of the book lies in its ability to untangle the conglomeration of key developments of early years policy from 1945-2005 whilst at the same time establishing itself as a reference book on early years policy that will never out date itself.
I predict that this book will quickly find a place on the book lists of colleges and universities around the country.
